DARLING JONES

* Hero of Kings Mountain ...said to have killed Col. Ferguson in

* Hero in the battle of Monk's Corner under Col. Evan Shelby's NC regiment.
Jones rec'd a land grant from NC for 259 acres in Washington Co. TN (then NC) for his duty in the war.

 

EXCERPTS
Haynes Miller purchased a log cabin once lived in by Darling and Nancy Huff that stood on Barton St. between two railroads. Haynes willed the cabin to the Girl Scouts of Johnson City. It stands as the Girl Scouts Lodge at their camp off Broadway St. There is a picture of Nancy standing in front of the cabin in 1898 when Nancy was in her late nineties. At the time she was the oldest Revolutionary War pension in the country.

From the book The Descendants of Darling Jones.... Lewis Jones (c1740) of Orange (later Wake) County, NC married Elizabeth Arnold (Arundel). Their three known children were born in Wake County: Darling, William B., and Lewis Jr. Sometime before the Revolution, Lewis, Sr and Elizabeth Arnold/Arundel Jones took up land near her father in what is now the present Carter County, TN. They lived on a 100-acre grant between Cobbs Creek and a mountain. The grant was recorded in Washington County TN 1784. The son, Darling Jones married first while he lived in NC, Nancy J Nelson (1766-1843), daughter of William Nelson. William Nelson preceded the Jones family to WashingtoN Co. and had land in the Asbury Community.

About the time of the Revolution, Darling Jones was visiting his parents in Washington (now Carter) County on the Doe River when he was drafted for Revolutionary service. He stated in his pension application: left Roans Creek, crossed Stone Mountain at the head of Watauga to the high hills of Santee and to the Santee Swamp where he joined Marion. He also stated he served in the Indian Wars with John Sevier. After the war, he moved his family to Washington Co. where he had a grant of 259 acres - Grant No. 1073, 7/11/1794) on Brush Creek. (The land was actually in the present Asbury Community)
