This photo, taken in June 1978, shows Class 40 Locomotives 40169 & 40173 at the north end of the station. The locomotives were preparing to shunt onto a Scottish Railway Preservation Society (SRPS) Railtour to Dufftown.
Note the track layout at this time. The two Class 40 Locomotives are in Platforms 9 & 8, whilst platform 7 is constructed as a terminating platform. The trackwork was heavily rationalised in 1980, resulting in the abandonment of platforms 8 & 9 and the reinstatement of platform 7 as a through platform. Today the space between platforms 9 & 8 accommodates a single-track headshunt for the Clayhills servicing depot.
The bridge above the Class 40 locomotives was for pedestrians only and was replaced with a covered right-of-way through the car park of the Trinity Shopping Centre when it was constructed.
