Class 40 Diesel Locomotive 40165 passes Aberdeen Ferryhill Signal Box in 1981. Note the extensive semaphore signal gantries. The wooden signal box was for many years responsible for controlling access to the Deeside Railway which joined the mainline to the south of the box. Surprisingly, although the Deeside Line closed in 1966 Ferryhill Signal Box remained in use until made redundant by the colour light signalling scheme completed in 1981.
