"Who left the kettle in here!". Actually, this shows ex-LNER Class A4 Pacific No. 60009 "Union of South Africa", which had worked a railtour in the area.

These locomotives have strong connections to Ferryhill, for in the 1960s during the rise of Diesel locomotives British Railways (Scottish Region) surprisingly introduced a 3 hour Aberdeen-Glasgow service using Class A4 pacifics (supplemented by A3s and V2s..and vitually any other type of loco still in working order!).

These spectacular workings continued, not in the least bit helped by the complete disasters being experienced with their chosen successors the North British Type 2s (Class 21s), until 1967 or 1968.
