LNER A4 Pacific No 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley waits to leave Aberdeen Joint Station with one of the accelerated "three-hour" services to Glasgow (Buchanan Street). The transfer of these former Kings Cross workhorses had been transfered in the midst of the introduction of British Railway's Diesel Locomotives, since there were no reliable locomotives able to operate the new services! The Aberdeen-Glasgow route was thus a mecca for enthusiasts until they were eventually displaced by diesel locomotives in the late 1960s, by which time the reliability of their diesel counterparts had improved somewhat!
Coincidentally this locomotive is one of several A4s preserved and is, at the time of writing, undergoing a major overhaul at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
