Holburn Street was built in 1894 by the Great North of Scotland Railway (then owners of the branch) for the introduction of the Suburban Services to Culter. In the period leading up to the construction of the new Joint Station in 1915, Holburn Street was the location where many people would disembark their train to aviod the congestion at the terminus - this was even done by royalty! With the removal of the suburban services in 1937, Holburn Street was closed. The two platforms (the line was doubled by the time Holburn Street was constructed) survive but there is no trace of any station buildings (and there are very few photographs of the buildings provided). The bridges either side of the station - crossing Holburn Street & the Hardgate - have been removed and recently there have been suggestions that a new bridge be erected for the walk / cycle-path which currently uses the trackbed, however the current proposals for the bridge will not be suitable should the railway be reinstated (as may happen in several years time).
