Murtle Station opened in 1853 and was one of a few stations between Ferryhill & Culter to have its own goods sidings (Cults being the other station). However in 1937 with the withdrawal of the suburban service to Culter (introduced in 1894), Murtle was closed. Today one of the two platforms can still be found in a derelict condition, and the former station building has been renovated and extended to form a private residence. It is currently painted in an attractive off-red colour.
A bridge to the east of the station which carried the railway over an access road has been removed and replaced with a smaller concrete bridge for the public path which now runs along the trackbed.
