Railways > Oldmeldrum Branch |
|
The first proposals for a railway to Oldmeldrum were made in 1855 when the line to Macduff was being planned.
Although the junction for the Macduff branch was moved from Inverury (contemporary spelling) to Inveramsay Junction - on the
grounds of cost - the Oldmeldrum branch was built to provide a rail service to the village.
Unfortunately the decision to place Oldmeldrum Station at the bottom of the hill (upon which the village is built) did not help encourage passenger traffic, resulting in passenger services being withdrawn in 1931 by the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER). Freight services lasted until 1966 and were latterly worked by the Inverurie Diesel Shunter (Class 08?). The station building at Oldmeldrum has been purchased by the Royal Deeside Railway Preservation Society who will be relocating the building to the Milton of Crathes on the reinstated "Deeside Line". |
