Recent Updates
2 February 2006
More new photographs have been added to the
Photo Archive, courtesy of John McIntyre. Apologies to John for the fact that these pictures have sat on my laptop for a ridiculous length of time. You can view the images
here.
Work is underway at present laying an additional siding at Waterloo Quay in Aberdeen, for the Omya traffic which has restarted. This means the Waterloo Branch from Kittybrewster is going back into use again, and surprisingly there is now an Industrial Shunter based at Omya to handle the traffic.
This work is apparently related to the Guild Street / Craiginches / Raith's Farm developments will which allow Guild Street to close for good soon (or so we're told!)

A new gallery of photographs has been added to the

Photograph of
Class 46 Peak No. 46045 at Aberdeen Ferryhilll Shed in 1981 added, courtesy of Malcolm Reid. Malcolm has also provided a re-scanned version of his
Class 50 No. 50024 photo which has replaced the previous version. Many thanks to Malcolm for his photos and help!
The much-promised update on this site still hasn't materialised I'm afraid, a combination of work with the
Royal Deeside Railway (a certain GNSR coach over Christmas anyway...) , university commitments and a term-time job) which are aking up much of my time. However I have started a
"sub-site" at
http://greatnorth.fotopic.net which contains some additional photographs not found on here (The GNSR Banff Branch is featured, for example..) together with other items of interest. Hopefully at some point I will have time to update this site more regularly. However I would still welcome contributions of photographs and information for the site and will try to respond quickly to any queries - you can reach me at
aberdeenrailways@hotmail.com

Corrected information on
Cambus O' May Station, and added a link to
Simon Fraser's website.
27 May 2004
Unfortunately a long period has passed once again between updates. There is little additional news to report at the moment, although I do intend to comprehensively update the whole website at some point in the near future. Watch this space!
12 November 2003
The
Aberdeen Joint Station page has finally been added to the site. The page has been rewritten somewhat, as the information on the page was somewhat out of date. Construction work at the Joint Station has finished (for the time being), both luggage footbridges have been repainted and re-waterproofed but little else has changed, except for the canopies on platform 7/8 which have been reglazed.
The
Crathes (Castle) Station page has had an additional picture added to show the progress being made by the Royal Deeside Railway Preservation Society to reopen the railway.
3 June 2003
Rebuilding work on Aberdeen Station (platforms 7/8 and 9) has continued, and some revisions of text and extra pictures now appear on the
Joint Station Rebuilding Page.
The main item of news to report is that, after a long delay, the
Royal Deeside Railway Preservation Society has finally recieved planning approval to reinstate a portion of the
Deeside Railway. For more information, see the
Royal Deeside Railway Preservation Society website.
Malcolm Reid has kindly added some information to the page on
Aberdeen Ferryhill Motive Power Depot which now appears on the site. Malcolm has also provided an interesting view of a Class 50 Diesel Locomotive on the fuelling point, which can be found in the
Old Pictures section of this site.
11 April 2003
The rebuilding of Aberdeen Joint Passenger Station has started! Workmen appear to be dismantling the elevator towers on the out-of-use bridges linking platforms 9,8 & 7 to the main concourse. Click
here for more information and pictures.
3 April 2003
Photo Archives 5, 5 (page 2) and 6 have now been re-uploaded with larger-size pictures and separate description pages. It was originally thought that this website would be subject to a 20MB size restriction, however this is no longer the case and larger size pictures are now available. Gallery 7 will also be done shortly.
These are all available in the
Old Pictures section of the website.
