Vocabulary

Here are some handy terms for your gaming enjoyment! Look carefully and you might see yourself lampooned somewhere in here. Email me with more terms or comments, if you have them!
Term Meaning Example/Remarks

Buildings
rax Barracks 'Going 3 rax' = lots of infantry; 'rax float'
cc command center 'Floating a cc'
fac factory 'cooking facs & going heavy metal'
gate/gw Gateway The good version of a barracks!
nex nexus 'Kill the nex' -- kill off your lame opponents mining capability.
star/sg/port starport or stargate The terran/toss buildings that allow you to build air
templar thingie citadel or archives. Angel's generic term for building names she can't remember. Watch out especially for the warning "he has thingies!" or "he's going thingies!"
hat hatchery 'Going 3 hat' -- slow to get zerglings, going to power (usually).
Strategic Terms
teching   Foregoing expansion, though not upgrades, usually, in order to climb the tech tree more rapidly for 'non-linear' units such as high templar or science vessels
powering   Expanding rapidly in order to have a very powerful economy. Typically multiple expansions, and weak early defense. Massing is the most usual way to proceed from here, although this can be combined with teching.
massing   1. In the context of an initial strategy, foregoing expansion and some upgrades, in order to get several controls/packs of 1-2 unit types into the game rapidly. A classic rush strategy. 2. In general context, building lots of units, mostly concentrating on 1-3 types.
upgrading   Could be teching, powering, or massing, but getting hard attack, defense, and speed (if applicable) upgrades for units you will be making a lot of.
dancing   pulling back the unit that is being attacked to save it while the rest of the units in its group continue attacking.
luring   drawing enemy units out (or in) by placing units near them, say for a storm.
gassing/gasser Is mining gas. Not necessarily teching, just mining gas. Something you look for when you scout.
natural/nat   The closest natural expansion to a given main "Blue expanding at his nat"
gimme   The next most logical expansion for a given main, if any.
backdoor   An assault on an opponent from an unexpected quarter. Often on the mineral lines. ("Drop zerg's backdoor with your reavers while I knock on his front door with my tanks")
1-12   Clock positions. 12 is top middle, 3 is right middle, 6 is bottom middle, 9 is left middle etc. (hit noon!)
float Terran lift off The action of lifting off one or more buildings; possibly offensively (see rax float); possibly defensively (see floater).
floater Terran lift off What annoying terrans do when you attack them without ranged units.
pylonboy, floaterboy   Annoying toss/terran players who hide pylons or buildings around the map after they've lost, just to delay the game ending.
cannonboy, turtleboy, sunkenboy   Annoying players who build lots of defenses at their chokes and 'turtle up'. Ruder than 'turtle'. Many cannonboys think that 12 cannons supported by one pylon is a pretty neat idea.
turtle   A player who simply surrounds himself with massive defenses.
control/pack 12 units. 'Got 2 controls of cracklots. Who should we hit?'
pop   1. the moment when a unit finishes building... it pops out. (eg "I'm popping wraiths to save you from those scary carriers Angel..."; popping medics soon) 2. to attack your opponent. (going to pop teal now) 3. what dying overlords do
cooking warping, building, mutating. "I'm cooking zealots" = building lots of zealots. "Cooking Obs" -- I finally have observatory and am building my first obs to save you from those nasty lurkers, Soy, since you again neglected to get detection!
psi-raid/reaver drop   A quick assault on an enemy's mineral line. ("dropping zerg main").
off cannon/ off bunker Offensive Cannon, Offensive Bunker Creating cannons/bunkers near (but out of sight) of an enemy's mineral line early in the game. Usually a nasty surprise.

omw On My Way What you hope your allies will say when you say "sos"
got it/ok/np   got it - I'm ok. What you want your allies to say after they've called out "SOS SOS SOS!!"
counter   What you should do after your ally has been attacked... What you should NEVER ask your ally about after she has told you to counter and WHILE she is desperately but skillfully fending off a double 5 pool with probes, unless you want her to get really irritated and start naming names like FrogPrince and making fun of you on her page!
np No problem
ggg go go go Means I'm in position and going in on an attack
gp Good Ping or... Going Private Since gp is confusing, ac is preferred.
ac Ally Chat Using ally chat.
y Yes or Why Can be confusing. ya/yes is clearer.

Free Bonus Quotes

"fire it up" - said after Soylent's firebats have done a significant amount of roasting.

"Crazy Eights" - what Soylent calls his wraith pack, as they are on hotkey 8.

"storm, baby, storm" -- what Angel says on those rare occasions when she can get several storms off and melt some of the enemy's troops!

"I do not command a starship: I command a force of nature" what Angel says on those even rarer occasions when she is wiping out an annoying terran or zerg with 12 carriers.

Again, free of charge, Soylent's Hot key assignments:

1-3 - comsats.
0 - marine pack especailly when rushing
9 - medics for those marines
8 - additional marines in an early rush
7 - additional spots for wraiths
6 - BC's.. always
5 - science vessels on a particular mission
4 - nothing really..I guess another comsat, if I ever expand that much
9 - dropships.
8 - tanks and scvs on an early rush
0 - ghost for mass lockdowns or nukes
7 - valks if I have the Crazy Eights out.

A lot of ppl say they use low numbers for thier infantry packs, but I start at 0 and work down for units since I use the arrow keys to move around a lot, and the highs are much more convenient.
