The following is a list of terms used on these webpages to make it easier for people to know what things mean.... If i'm missing something please email me and let me know.
Aft Jib - On a yawl it's the jib to the aft of the ship as there's up to two jibs.
Ballast - Weight in the keel or on the windward side that restrains the boat from heeling too far.
Beam(BM) - A boat's greatest width.
Bowsprit - The front bit of a ship at times, it's only a bowsprit if it's a long polelike object sticking out, it's used to extend sails beyond the boat.
Displacement - The water that's moved because of the ship being in the water [how many tons of water would be there if the ship weren't].
Divided Rig - A ship with two masts such as a yawl, schooner, or ketch.
Draft - Hieght of ship under the water.
Fractional Rig - A sail that's only halfway or so up a mast is a fractional rig.
Jib - Sail carried on the headstay or forestay.
Mainsail - Sail hoisted on the after side of the mainmast pronounced "mains'l".
Mast - That which holds up the sails, any ship with at least one sail has at least one mast. If a ship has more then one the main one's called quite simply the main mast.
Mizzen Mast - The mast that hold's the mizzen sails.
Mizzen Sail - The small aftermost sail on a ketch or yawl, set on the mizzenmast.
Mizzen Staysail - A small jib tacked down partway back from the headstay in this case off of the mizzenmast.
Yawl - Two-masted boat whose after mast, the mizzenmast, is shorter then the forward mast, the mainsail, and is located aft or the rudder post.
