CD ROM Compact Disk Read Only Memory. A method of storing information on a plastic disk about 5 1/4 inches in diameter. A CD is a sandwich of plastic on the outside with a reflective substrate on the inside. Using binary notation, a series of extremely small "holes" or dull spots are burnt into the interior reflective surface by a very fine laser beam. When read, the alternating reflective and dull spots become the 0's and 1's of computer stored information. An average CD will currently hold about 650 megabytes of information, about the equivalent of the text size of 32 Webster's New Collegiate Dictionaries.
CDRW Compact Disk Read Write. A type of Compact Disk that is re-writable. The substrate in a CDRW disk is more volatile than that in a CD ROM. Thus using various technologies the material can be made reflective again, effectively erasing any data that was stored there. In practice, a CDRW disk can be re-used only about an average of 1000 times, though this number is going up as the technology to create the disks improves. A "special" type of drive is required to be able to write to CDRW disks.
