DVD Digital Video Disk; Digital Versatile Disk. The next step up from the compact disk. As more and more types of data were stored on CDs, i.e. music, snippets of TV shows and Movies, and as a more permanent form of media distribution was sought by the media industries of film and TV, and as the physical amount of "permanent" digital computer data grew, new method of storing that information in larger, more cost effective means was necessary. Thus the DVD. The method is the same as for CD, i.e. a spinning disk with reflective and non-reflective pits representing binary data, but the technique is different. Finer focused laser beam, more control of the location of the beam, etc. With the advent of the DVD it became possible to distribute things like normal length movies via a more cost-effective medium.
