All Day Hike & Bike

The tour begins at the Kilauea Visitor Center where you will receive an informative orientation to the Park and watch an excellent video about the Park's history.

Then it's on to the Jagger Museum and Volcano Observatory where there are many visual displays about the volcanic properties of the area and how an active volcano is monitored. There are exceptional photographic opportunities from the observation deck of Halema'uma'u Crater and the Kilauea Caldera.

Our next stop is the Halema'uma'u Crater Overlook where there are many interesting, colorful, lava formations and an excellent viewing platform directly above the Crater.

THE BIKE TRIP - We bike down the Hilina Pali Road which lies directly above the Hilina Pali Fault. This scenic, downhill, one-lane road offers uplands Ohi'a forest, Nene (endangered Hawaiian Goose) nesting grounds, and several Kipuka's (areas of unique flora & fauna). Along the way your guide will stop and point out different aspects of the fault and local flora and fauna. The ride ends at the spectacular Hilina Pali Overlook some 1,600' above the ocean, which has been in view for half of the ride, where we have lunch.

The Hike - After lunch we'll head to Thurston Lava Tube where you get to walk through a lava tube once containing molten magma. This very scenic place is famous for it's beautiful foliage and rare aviary species. Across the road we begin the hike to Kilauea Iki Crater and beyond. On the way to the crater we pass through native giant fern and Ohi'a forest. This area is also rich in rare birds. Your naturalist guide will explain about the many different natural plant species and try and spot an Iwi'i for you. Now we descend 400', on a switchback trail, into the crater. We'll walk across the crater as your guide points out the many unique geological features which typify this very special place. At the far side of the crater we climb back out to the Bryon Ledge Trail which passes through native Ohi'a forest in a much dryer environment than the giant fern forest trail. The Bryon trail merges with Devastation Trail where you will see the awesome power of the volcano close up. The Devastation Trail also offers some of the finest views of Kilauea Caldera and Mauna Loa Volcano in the Park. The tour ends at the Devastation Trail parking lot from where we will return you to your point of origin.
