ON THIS MONTHS COVERMEMORIESby Glenn I MalloryEditors note: The following write up was sent to me several years ago and only rediscovered a few months ago in going through the hundreds of items that you readers have sent me over the years. It's a great old photo and Glenn will tell you all about it... Many memories are awakened when viewing this 1936 picture. This was my uncles service station located in the Southern Illinois town of Sesser. It being the first built in this locality in 1924. Horace Mallory was the operator until it closed in the early 1940's. As a High School lad, I worked there several summers in the early 1930's. It was my introduction to the motoring world, as I put gas in such cars as Moon, Franklin and even a Dixie-Flyer. As far back as I can recall I have been a collector. In 1928 it was postage stamps. By the late 1960's it was antique automobiles and associated memorabilia. My uncle (who died in 1982 at the age of 98) learned of my interests. While visiting him during the early 1970's he led me out to a building at his home and proposed selling me the contents left over from his gasoline station. Easily, I succumbed to his offer. Shortly there after I became a Hershey vendor. My first Hershey sale was an original gasoline pump globe from the station is Sesser. It is likely there are people who will read this article that purchased and may still be using something that originally came from this station in Sesser and the cache of goods I obtained. It's been a long time but the picture sure brings back memories... There was no running water at the station and I well remember the ole two-holer. The old car, a Buick I believe, has a spare tire cover advertising the County Fair. The man on the right was Byford Boyd (Deceased) a high school classmate. In the center, as mentioned, my uncle Horace.
