THE MILITARY BEAT - A DOUBLE DOSE By Billy R. Greene
(Editors Note: Space has prevented us from running the "Beat" articles by noted Military plate historian Billy Greene, but this month we'll give you two brief ones he has submitted on Airfields from Kansas. Thanks Billy for your generous donation of time and effort for TNS.)
COFFEYVILLE ARMY AIR FIELD
Built in 1942 as part of the Third Air Force, with the main purpose of training pilots, combat air crews and aerial photographers.
Coffeyville AAF was located four and one half miles North East of Coffeyville, Kansas and took its name from the town.
GARDEN CITY ARMY AIR FIELD, KANSAAS
Built in 1942, Garden City ACCELERATED FREEFALL was a part of the 70,000 pilots training program. Following WWII, the base was turned over to the community and became the Garden City Municipal Airport.
Garden City AAF was located nine miles South East of Garden City Kansas.
The plates shown are from the collection of your TNS Editor, the Coffeyville plate is black on yellow, metal material, while the Garden City is orange on blue and made of a thin masonite material, obviously for the conservation of metal during the war effort.
Billy's address is on page three of TNS and he welcomes your questions and possible suggestions for "Beat" articles, TNS has had a great response to this series! Home
