NAAS WHITING FIELD

Upon graduating from Waitham Vocational High School in Massachusetts in 1966 I enlisted in the United States Navy. While I was in school the recruiter was a frequent visitor offering tech school for a "little bit of your time". Upon completing boot camp at Great Lakes Illinois Naval Training Center I received my orders to report to Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida.

When I arrived at Mainside Pensacola both the USS Wasp and USS Lexington were home-ported there for the Naval Air Training Command. At the time additional personnel were being sent to the Naval Auxiliary Air Station in the "boon docks" of Milton, Florida. When I finally reached Whiting Field I was assigned to the Aircraft Handling Division in Training Squadron Three. At that time the Auxiliary Air Station was home to Training Squadron Two and Three and the Aircraft Maintenance Division. All of the aircraft at this facility were T28 Navy Trainers. Throughout the next year I towed aircraft in and out of hangers and onto the flight line among many other aircraft maintenance tasks. Shortly thereafter I received my orders to report to jet engine school at Naval Air Technical Training Command at Memphis, Tennessee. The license plate depicted above was on the front of my tow tractor and managed to leave Milton with me and has been with me ever since.

I will never forget my first assignment in Milton and the lasting friendships that I made at Whiting Field. I am very proud to have been able to serve in the Air Wing of the United States Navy.
