YUMA ARMY AIRFIEID

Yuma Army Air Field was built by what was then the Army Air Corps, in 1928, and was originally known as Fly Field.

During WW II it was used as one of several Army Air Fields providing training for the 70,000 pilot training program of the Army Air Forces. Later in WW II , Yuma A.A.F. was also used as a training site for bober crews and radar observers.

Due to a slow down in training activities after the end of WW II, Yuma A.A.F. was closed in 1946 and lay dormant until 1951 when it was reopened by the U. S. Air Force. Then it was renamed Vincent Air Force Base.

When the Air Force left, the base became a Marine Corps Air Station and later when the Marine Corps left it became Yuma International Airport.

Yuma A.A.F. was located 4.5 miles South East of Yuma Arizona, and named for that city.
