This 1978 view illustrates some of the variety of rolling stock to be found at Ferryhill at the time. Going from left to right, the first item is a
Swindon Class 120 Diesel Multiple Unit, these were used on Aberdeen-Inverness services but were withdrawn by 1980 and transferred elsewhere.
Next to the Class 120 DMU are two Class 47 (Brush Type 4) locomotives - the one on the right has the original headcode display whilst the one on the left has the later sealed-up unit with two lights. Next, a Class 25 (Sulzer Type 2) with a Series One Bodyshell (these variants were built with gangway connectors to allow traincrew to move between moving locomotives, but they were all removed and sealed up with metal plates).
Next a Class 37 (English Electric Type 3) and then a Class 25 with a later (Series 2/3) bodyshell. Then a Class 47, and then a tank wagon and BR Standard Brake Van. The brakevans were derived from the LNER Standard Design (the
Royal Deeside Railway has a preserved example of this design).
Finally a Class 25 (Series One Bodyshell) conceals a Class 37 or a Class 40 parked behind it.
