A popular station for many years, Schoolhill opened in the 1880's. It closed in 1937 when the suburban services were removed. The station was situated directly underneath the viaduct, running from below next to His Majesty's Theatre to a point along the edge of the Union Terrace Gardens. It doubled up as a fare stage for Aberdeen Joint until platform barriers were introduced (see Other Oddities).

Schoolhill Station survived until 1977, at which point it was demolished. Although the station appears to have been accessed from the Rosemount Viaduct above the platforms, today it is possible to see the site of the station from within the Union Terrace Gardens. A flimsy metal fence separates the gardens from the mainline to Inverness (now single track), and there have been several cases of people walking through the tunnel (noteably shoplifters seeking to make a quick - and dangerous - escape). A more sturdy fence may have been erected since the pictures shown on this page were taken.

As a forenote, there is also the remains of a turntable in Union Terrace Gardens. In the Union Street end, there is a metal roof over a circular pit - best seen from train, but you can see it if you know what you're looking for. The town council put several conditions over its use - no trains were allowed to "steam up" here, as it was below the roadway.
