Oldmeldrum Station opened in 1856 as the terminus of the short branch from Inverurie, which lost its passenger services in 1931 - the fact that the station was constructed at the bottom of the hill on which Oldmeldrum village was probably a major disadvantage of the station, especially when buses began to compete with the railway traffic.

After passenger services were withdrawn goods to Oldmeldrum continued to run until 3rd January 1966, when the line was closed by British Railways. The station buildings at Oldmeldrum have survived in use as industrial premises however the site is currently derelict since CSC Crop Protection left in 2002. The surviving GNSR wooden station building has been purchased by the Royal Deeside Railway Preservation Society and funds are being sought to re-erect the building at the Milton of Crathes. The remaining station buildings (goods shed etc) will probably be demolished to permit the redevelopment of the site.
