Hey chink, In your most recent article about the game industry you write how E3 is filled with boys who have out of control hormones and lack maturity. However you fail to note the demographics of gamers and what E3 represents. E3 is where the newest and latest games are to be shown off. These games are not those that are for mass market appeal for the most part. Games by GOD are not played or even aimed at 10% of the population. The people they are aiming at are those who have an interest in looking at booth babes. You say, "And while the ISDA claims that 43 percent of gamers are female -- though I suspect it took some seriously creative jiggering of what counts as a "gamer" to derive that figure -- female attendance at E3 seemed closer to between 5 and 20 percent." You fail to do research here. Let me define things for you. Gamers are those who play games. Now hearts, spades and bridge are games. Women for the most part go online and play these card games therefore it it not stretching any truth to say 43% of women play games. They do play games and the games they pay are mostly card games or those that have a more mass market appeal. There was no stretch in my wording was there? Let me say it again. Those who play games are called gamers. Simple? I hope so. Now those who go to E3 want every game under the sun. Games that are meant for the hardcore. People who demand the newest and most innovative. They are most often boys or males who are lured by women good looking women. Now look at a car show. How many women are there as lookers? Why are they not a subject of ridicule? How come people do not shun cars? They have magazines that make frequent use of women in g-strings and they make create a more macho persona to the people. They dish out big numbers and smoke to get people to come plus have shiny stuff to touch. Why is it cars are main stream? Cars have been around for a hundred years now while games have been only around for a little more than 20 years. We have not even had ONE generation who has lived though this time. Give the game industry 5 generations and you will see how people will accept it more. The news media is part of a generation that grew up without games. I expect they are looking at it as some kind of trivial thing. A toy. Notice in the 50's and 60's people dismissed computers are toys. But look at them now. They are a new future for us. We have moved from a Atomic age to an Information age in about 50 years. But if you notice games they are evolving like movies and tv have. There are your 6th Day's and your Debbie Does Dallas but there are also your Patton's and the Matrix. I am not too sure what movies should be doing for us but games currently are supposed to do one thing. Get us to have fun. They are made for fun. What good is a game that explains to us Einstein of shakespeare in a deadpan monotone? None. There have been many games that took ideas and made out some fantastic storylines. Some games talked about life and death. Virtue and honor. If you notice games sites they talk mostly about "gosh" games! The women are not the biggest picture in their minds. They are looking for the newest games and tech not for the women. Women are like the icing on the cake, it is there to tempt, you are there for the main course, the games. Given games or to stare at a booth babe most of the people there would find a game of more interest. You sell gamers short by saying that the "chicks" are the priority of people there. There are many journalists there who are covering the show professionally and care about the games. You have just settled on the extremists of the group. You compare games to porn. But porn is enjoyed by few people. It has been around for centuries but few found joy in it. Electronic games on the other hand are new and have yet to be embraced. If you really do look at the industry movies are most like games. There are good games bad games like there are good movies and bad movies. And they have stuffs that cater to a certain market. Just because the Game industry is small now does not mean it will stay that way. You yourself say how the game industry has grown in the last five years. Give it more time and you can maybe see it bloom past movies. After all games offer all that movies provide and add in the element of interaction. Movies make gross use of pretty people most of the time. So does the fashion industry who makes up hideous clothes that few would wear or could own. They have been accepted by the main stream. How is it that a how that shows up once a year be more damaging than what you see 24/7? I think YOU should grow up and learn to not point fingers and take a "I am holier than thou" attitude. You have not given credit to gamers as people. Give the industry time and you will see how it will grow larger and more sophisticated. Maybe it is already there it is just that you cannot see it with your blinders on. In an older rant you say, "Hardcore gamers usually describe Carmack as the talented half of the former Romero/Carmack team, but it's always been unclear, besides technical proficiency and a knack for commissioning artwork-pretty explosions, what exactly Carmack's talent is." What are you trying to say here? Are you saying Carmack lacks talent? You seem to have a narrow mind about skills and talent. He is like a writer, artist and engineer. He makes the engines that run games. He must write code, set up methods of drawing and help set it all up with the other parts of a game like artwork and music. He is what many people aspire to become in the field of programming. I find what he does more fascinating and important than what Shakespeare spit out. Read as follows: If Webber wants to go to a 'good' team, they will have to make salary cap room for him, which involves the sign and trade. The only other alternative is Webber could take a crappy contract and sign for 0 money, but then would be working for nothing. Why can't he just sign a one year deal for 0 cash, and then resign a year later for the big money after getting his championship ring up the ass like Shaq? Because years ago a Portland General Manager by the name of Geoff Petrie did the exact same thing with Chris Dudley, and the NBA banned those kinds of deals. Now we know how l33t the King's GM is, huh? Also, Webber makes more money off of a sign and trade. If signing with the Kings, the Maloofs are allowed to sign for up to seven years, with a 12.5% salary increase over each subsequent year. The NBA rules are such that if he were to straight sign with another team, they are only allowed to sign for six years, and increase by 10% each of those years. Webber makes more money stay or leave, if he signs with the Kings. Whoever inherits Webber inherits his contract.
