The Diocese of Pangkal Pinang had been involved in handling Vietnamese and Cambodian refugees since the beginning of their arrival in Indonesia, in Letung, Tanjung Pinang and Galang. Initially Diocese of Pangkal Pinang also helped those Catholic refugees financially, until their departure to the third country or repatriated back to their homeland in Vietnam or Cambodia. Afterwards they were all been placed in Galang Island, this location is commonly known as Vietnamese/Cambodian refugee camp. For spiritual services, Bishop of Pangkal Pinang always send Priests and Sisters to accompany them, Priests and sisters stayed together with them until they left Galang island in June 1996. Since Monsignor Hilarius Moa Nurak SVD was appointed as the Bishop of Pangkal Pinang he had been regularly visiting to strengthen them through the hardship. For that 3 churches had been built, 2 of them located at Galang site I and the other one at Galang site II, One of them was consecrated by the late Archbishop that moment Mgr. Leo Sukoto, SJ, from Archdiocese of Jakarta. Beside churches, 2 shrines were built at site I and site II, which built to celebrate the year of Maria 1988. Beside these, there is a public graveyard, with area for Catholic, known as Site III. After the refugees left, the camp has been closed since then, Catholic Church and BIDA (Batam Island Development Authority) has been trying to maintain those buildings which are historical values and potentially can be developed as one of tourist spot of Batam Island As per the letter from BIDA no: B/037/DEOPS/III/99 March 1999, The parish of St. Peter Batam was appointed, responsible to renovate and maintain and manage all remaining assets of Catholic Church and include church services.
II. Management Plan To follow up the letter from BIDA, Rempang section, Parish of St. Peter has collected data on assets and drafted a re-development planning. And the Renovation and maintenance project of Catholic Church of Galang island team has been formed and Mr. Ir Stephanus Santosa has been appointed as the main coordinator (refer to attachment "the letter of appointment").The team has developed a detail actions and budget plan. Due to limited resources. The first priority of first phase work will be focus on the redevelopment of Galang site II, the work will begin Feb 2000 until May 2000.
