Is Professional Gaming Viable?

A couple of days ago, yet another article on pro-gaming appeared on GameSpot. If you haven't checked it out yet, it's a good, but pretty long read.

Hoony over at Challenge-World recently commented on the article. This is probably the best set of thoughts so far on the subject.

What's the verdict? Someone contact the Malaysian hopefuls: IT AIN'T GONNA GO AS FAR AS YOU HOPE IT MIGHT.

Some tidbits:

Gamespot: There is no stable, broad platform - "If professional competitive gaming is going to grow and attempt to capture a wider audience of spectators, it has to move away from Quake-only tournaments and allow more games into the field" - Jennifer Ho Features Editor. "One of the inherent problems with professional gaming is that specific games must be used for competition: These games aren't getting any newer with the passage of time, and other games are constantly being released" - Andrew Park Associate Editor.

CHWD: These are well-known obstacles to the growth of pro gaming, but I feel they get overstated here. In order to get a wider audience you could broaden the gaming appeal to other games, but this can equally well dilute the heat. It's a balancing act and we know it's why the CPL is
expanding into counterstrike very carefully, but also the fundamental "Quake genre" is critical because it is where the real action and skill is, no doubt about it. Whether or not the future DOOM will be viable, and whether the current crop of top players can migrate to it are genuine questions for the transition to future platforms, but we already have players who started with the old DOOM. The crop of competitive players is continually growing, despite changes from Quakes 1 2 and 3. Players have shown they can be flexible. So there are two issues here - one is expanding the market size by taking on counterstrike etc, and the other is how to keep growing the FPS set despite the transition to new platforms. Neither are obstacles that are insurmountable, if managed well. However, neither will in themselves generate the sort of revenue required to make pro gaming viable at the level Gamespot is talking about. For that you need the holy grail.
The entire debate can best be summed up by a quote from Elliot Chin, Executive Editor at GameSpot:

"At best, professional gaming will be a niche industry with a very small but devoted roster of regular players. Very few people are inclined to watch games; fewer still are inclined to participate in professional play; and even fewer still are good enough to win their living at it. Without a larger fan base, professional gaming won't be able to attract promoters. And without promoters, there will be no prizes and no money, and thus less incentive for gamers to participate in an already shaky industry. Sorry gamers, but you'll have to find real jobs, because games are meant to be played for fun, not for money".

NBTD Issues Again...

Our local heroes have done it again. A quick peek at their indulgent homepage, a drop on their members, followed by a short trip to their public forum will reveal some civil unrest of vulgar proportions.

The story so far: Some dude HUGEHAMSTER decided to take them for a ride, and this other guy Fuct5 decidedly jumped into the fray. Nael couldn't sit still because (as usual) everyone thought he was behind this (groan... again) so he had to put in a few words. Now it's an entertaining scramble of grammar, politics, old rivalry, Quake vs CS and loads of lame shit, something to indulge in while you wonder what other random URLs might contain anything of interest.

I don't want to stir up anything again but HUGEHAMSTER and Fuct5 did put in some very, very interesting thoughts, Lilhamster replied very, very civilly and their "cooler" members, and fans became very, very enraged indeed. And my clan was insulted in the process.

SO THERE YOU GO, DAMN YOU ALL! Look under the headings HUGEHAMSTER, FUCT5, TO NAEL AND HUGEHAMSTER OR SOMETHING, 2 threads full of NBTD SUCKS!!!!, NBTD, CAMPERSTRIKE, GAMING SUXORS, WHY NBTD SUCKS, APOLOGIZE AND THE ULTIMATE TRUTH, SPONSORS, FUNNY and other assorted threads for all the low down, mudslinging action of the highest degree of entertainment!

Also, on a side note, watch out for Challenge-My's interview with NBTD, all part of our service to the community and premiering in our upcoming soft launch!

Thresh vs Makaveli on Dreamcast, sorta

Finally, Maka gets to lay the smackdown on Thresh. All the action on Dreamcast and over SegaNet, as they playtest Q3A for the DC with a variety of controls. Check it out over at Gamers.com!

Here's a segment from the accompanying interviews:

Gamers.com: Thresh, are you ever going to enter competition again?

Thresh: Uh… (pauses)

Makaveli: He's scared of Makaveli.

(Everyone laughs.)

Thresh: (to Makaveli) No, I don't think so. I think you need to be reminded of who taught you, dude. (Smiles)
They both agree later that if Thresh were to return he'd probably make top 10 without too much trouble.

The battle was done

It looks like Makaveli has defeated Thresh in Quake 3 Arena 1on1. No joke here guys. It was a great match and the final score was very close. Only 4 frags separated the winner from the loser. Even though the frags were not very high but the game was intense. Ok here is the score, Makaveli (-1), Thresh (-5). No joke fellas! This could only happen when both of them played it on a Dreamcast. Anyway check out for more info about the match between the 2 here.

Quake 3 Arena Guide

Check out this site by LamerKatz. Its really cool. It tells about the different Quake3 strategies which I never knew existed. I think after reading the guide, I think I am a better plaer now. The guide teaches the different techniques of fooling your opponent and also it boasts about the rocket jump strategies. Check it out lah!

Slow Updates

I would like to apologize for the slow updates these past few days due to busy schedule and also chmy. Anyway since WCGC finished with Fatality taking the medal, things have been kind of slow. One of the demos to really watch from WCGC is the Lakerman Zero4 demos. I think it was a pretty good demo and I think that Zero4 has real potential. You can get the demos from WCGC here.
All we can do is wait for most of our exams to be over and enjoy the December holidays and also maybe wait for upcoming Quake 3 tourneys. Yes that is right. Lets just wait and see. Also picked this up NBTD's homepage, it seems that Razor will be coming down here to KLCC to launch Razor Boomslang and guess who they are bringing down here? Fatality. Hopefully there will be a quake tourney there.

Fatality triumphs again

Well, just woke up and since no one's updated I suppose after last night the entire crew must still be snoring away. Anyway, the WCGC ends with Fatality proving again he's the currently the undisputed champ, beating Lakerman 13-5 in Q3Tourney2. The list of winners and their booty:

1st - cK-fatal1ty (USA), $25,000
2nd - All*Lakerman (SWE), $15,000
3rd - kOz.Zero4 (USA), $6,000
4th - e9-Trinidy (SWE), $4,000

The following demos are linked to the Challenge network:

Fatality-Lakerman Finals

WCGC: Lakerman consumed Trinidy in the Losers, and then defeated Zero4 who fizzled out to Fatality in the Winners.

This means Fatality will now meet Lakerman (who'll have to defeat Fata twice) in the finals while Zero4 has secured 3rd place and Trinidy, 4th.

Muiy had better re-post his Letter to Zero4, substituting "Zero4" with "Lakerman". Can the All-Star Swedish hawker cut his chops right this time round? My money's on Fatality but I'll be cheering for Lakerman!

1.25y patch

All your bitchin's been heard and id's released the 1.25y patch, available at the Shugashack.

This patch tweaks the physics and brings the game back up to the speeds we're used to in 1.17.

Before you get it be warned that this patch is merely a test with the purpose of collecting feedback. A proper patch will be out later in the week, and no, your favourite mods still won't work with it.

Warzone League Updates

Here is a short update on the current events of the Warzone League. Finally Clan Kraken has gotten a win but the win was another walkover. It seems that Clan NBR didn't turn up that day. Alien beat Omaha(1) while NBTD beat Vendetta just a few hours ago. At Warzone2 PLAM beat DB. More updates to come!

Battle Between Nations

Looks like it will be the battle of the nations. Only one will win the tourney but by the looks of it U.S.A has an advantage over Sweden. Yes it is the semi-finals of the WCGC. In the winner's bracket we have Fatality versus Zero4 and in the losers bracket we have Trinidy versus Lakerman. Who will win? Place your bets gentleman (yeah rite). Anyway we shall see who is the best in the world.

Professional Gaming Article

So Far, So Soon, an article written by Bruce Rolston over at the Adrenaline Vault traces the entire concept and realization of Pro Gaming, attributing the big bang to Quake and the famous E3 Red Annihilation (remember Thresh's Ferrari?). It's a very well written summary of what's happened from the beginning, and worth the extra few seconds of your online time.

Read it!

Fatality > Lakerman?

WCGC: Fatality beats Lakerman but not without much controversy. What happened was that Fat was leading 3-0 in the first match when both players were inexplicably disconnected from the server. According to the rules, any problem arising before the 5-minute mark would call for a fresh restart, without carrying any of the scores over.

However, one of the organizers mentioned that the match would be restarted with Fat having a 3-0 lead. Lakerman objected, only to be told, "Well, Fatality must at least get one frag!"

Lakerman won the next match 5-4. YES. But it wasn't rosy at all. Because of Fatality's supposed 1 free frag, the score was considered 5-5, which meant a draw.

Another match was held to determine the real winner, one which Fatality overwhelmed our All Star by at least 10 frags, sending Lakerman into the Loser's to meet Emplate (the Xeno guy who sent Carnage into the Loser's).

Get more info at XSReality.

Korea Rox

If you guys out there who havn't seen any pictures from WCGC, you better check them out here. Babes galore. Everywhere you turn you can see babes. Even the babes that Fatality was dancing with were super! Trust the Europeans to take pictures of all the chun chicks hehe. Even the Singaporeans couldn't stand the sight of all the chicks and babes. I think that they had an eye sore ahha. No offence meant =Þ.

WCGC Results

I was kind of hoping that LakerMan might beat Fatality but in the end looks like the best man won. Well its still not over for LakerMan. He might have a chance at the losers bracket. Anyway Fatality beat Lakerman after two matches. The match seemed screwed up due to server problems but you can catch the whole incident over at Reality. LakerMan will meet Stelam in the loser's bracket.

In the other matches, Emplate from Canada defeated =I.D=Apple from China while Trinidy from Sweden defeated Python from Australia. It looks like that the Swedish still have a chance to grab the title that is if Trinidy manage to beat Zero4 who defeated ZyZ from Germany.Well it looks like the battle of the titans.

Anyway in the loser's bracket all is not lost for Lakerman. I mentioned earlier that he had to meet Stelam. Well looks like he won his match and will be meeting another German which is Stinger who defeated =I.D=Apple from China. Our only Asian hope is Elan who defeated ZyZ from Germany and will be meeting with Python who beat DOomer.

The next matches will around 4.30pm Korean time (uh what time would that be for us?). Another great match to be watched should be Fatality vs Emplate. Who will emerge champion of America? Just can't wait for their demos.

Warzone League

Looks like our local quake clan Kraken has a matchup against NBR today at Warzone3 which is located at Section 14 near Metrojaya. Anyway they aren't playing quake but NBR is actually Stryker-X's younger brother's team. Well maybe with abit of luck and some quake skill maybe I might get some frags. Wish me luck but still good luck to everyone who is playing in the league. Anyway this would be my last league match this month until my finals are over. gg SAM finals!

Change Of Plans

OK I talked to Keil today and he told me that it would be better that the meeting be held on Saturday night. Well maybe because most of the Backroom and Atomic fellas are there at Warzone2 during that time. Anyway will be at Warzone2 on Sunday afternoon playing an official one on one match with Kopitiam and maybe even La-Vache. Anyway anyone who is interested can come on both Saturday or Sunday. I just want to discuss how the format you all would like to have for the trials to choose the national team. I really need your support so help me out okay? gg Quake 3 Arena!

1.17 vs 1.25

Just came back from Warzone a few mins ago. Again and again I felt that the 1.25 patch has really changed the entire gameplay. No wonder a lot of people are boycotting it. Well for me it just seems that everything is moving slower and strafe jumps seem to be harder to execute. Even all the fancy jumps and shit is getting too hard to execute especially the Q3Tourney4 jump from health to health. But to some it is a blessing. No more bugs (not that I know of) and you can't seem the shoot a fella from underneath anymore. The damage doesn't go through the platform and this makes the tactics for Q3Tourney4 completely useless. Looks like camping at the top will ensure victory unless you rail like a nightmare bot. Still we shall see what the players think. By the way, no more Rocket Arena. =(

Warzone League Updates

Looks like Clan SI has beaten Team Omaha(2) 18 to 6 yesterday at Warzone 2 while NBTD trashed TGA 20 to 1 at Warzone 3. Yes it is the third day of the Warzone League which will last for 3 months until December. Today's match up will be Clan TGA vs Clan Ghost at Warzone1, Clan PSU(2) vs Clan WPGS at Warzone2 and Clan [E.I.D] vs PLAM(1) at Warzone3. So far the favourites for the league is NBTD (Nothing Better To Do) and PLAM(Play Like A Man) but things could turn out differently.

WGCC Matches

After reading about the sad news that the Singaporeans are out of the game, well there is always a next time. The upcoming matches are to be held tomorow which is the 12th of October and so far many people's predictions about who will reach the quarter-final stage is coming true but anything could just change.

Here are the upcoming matchups in the winners bracket,
LakermaN(Swe) VS Fatal1ty(US)
=I.D=Apple(Chn) VS Emplate(Can)
Trinidy(Swe) VS Python(Aus)
Zero4(US) VS ZyZ(Ger)

Upcoming Matches for the Losers Bracket
Silent(UK) VS Slinger(Ger)
s37.Elan(Kor) VS Scoob(Aus)
Giant(Ger) VS DOomer(Swe)
Stelam(Ger) VS LoBsta(Aus)
All these matches will be held on the 12th of October. Head over here to get the demos.
