Community gossip

News from the Warzone:

The Malaysian Quake 1 Legend [heh] known as GuizX has been banned from stepping into Warzone DJ AND SS3. The ban will be for 3 months, and I'm pretty much wondering how that mofo will be spending his nights. To avoid further embarassment to any party, I'm gonna spare the exact details.

You won't be seeing much of PlatinumX around Warzone anymore either as he was fired from his job as a casher in the establishment just 2 nights ago. He can usually be seen in the LAN shop during.. er, whenever. I'm not sure whether he's been barred from the place, but it's pretty much confirmed that he won't be at the place 24/7 no more. Man, I'm gonna miss that slacker.

[9]US

Whoa looks like 2 ex-Deathrow members joined forces with Clan 9(US). With these new current players, it seems that this division is quite strong. Anyway one of the players that joined the team is Unholy.

By the way there is a CS clan fight this Saturday at 10am at Warzone2. Its Kraken vs [JED].

E-Station Pan-Asia Competition

Ok I know this news is stale. Anyway looks like our friendly neighbours are having a Quake III tourney. The prizes are very attractive but as I failed to mention in Kraken's homepage is that only the top 14 SINGAPOREANS will be sponsored to compete in the olympic style games tournament which is going to be held in Korea. Talk about good luck man. If only Malaysia had tournaments like this not like the recent fake Quake III tourney over the weekend.Oh ya, the details are just below.

SCHEDULE (in Singapore)
Date for FIFA 2000 : 1st Sep 2000
Date for Quake III : 8th / 9th / 10th Sep 2000
Date for Starcraft (Brood War) : 16th / 17th Sep 2000
Time : 1000 hrs to 1800 hrs
Venue : e-station, #03-029 Suntec City Mall (Above Carrefour)

On-Line Registration : www.e-station.com.sg
Closing Date : 31 August 2000 (Thursday)
Enquiry : 733-2722 (Main)

So, anyone interested?

In.Tech's side of the story

On Fly's request, I'm putting up here what In.Tech has to say in reply to Kopitiam's e-mail to them [anyone care to post a copy?], and also, albeit indirectly, to all the heat directed at them by you guys. If you got here late, catch up on everyone else over here

The reason we chose to run the Urban Warfare mod for the PC Bazaar Games Challenge was to level the playing field for all contestants. We know there are Quake III communities out there as there are CounterStrike communities, whose members probably all clock in something like 100 hours of gameplay in a month. In short, they live, eat, breath and sleep those games; read they're extremely good at them.
Now the PC Bazaar Games Challenge is intended for everyone and anyone who wants to try and win the coveted Pentium III prize machine -- do you think it would have been fair for Intel and In.Tech as organisers to choose a game that only one section of the entrants would be super good at, while the others who don't play it at all (or less religiously) would be at a disadvantage? After all, the event wasn't named PC Bazaar Games Challenge for Quake III (or CounterStrike) Gamers, right?
The Urban Warfare mod, we felt, was less well known and therefore a fairer choice for the challenge. Also, it was our experience that every time we run a computer game that's well known by the masses, there are always a few "individuals" who will try to bend the rules by changing game parameters on the sly from the console (which sadly, also happened during this challenge).
With the Urban Warfare mod, we kept this "tweaking attempts" down to the minimum. Again, this was for the benefit of all players. I'm sure you would not want to lose out on the prize just because some other player was a computer hacker, right?
We also announced the game as Quake III Arena and left out the bit about the Urban Warfare mod for the simple reason that we did not want anyone downloading the mod from the Internet and then practising and practising and practising. As I said before, we wanted as level a playing field as we would get. And Urban Warfare was as fair as we could humanly make it for all the contestants.
And as for the delay in having the mod installed on the first day, well that was a minor snafu. These things happen whenever a major show goes on. The technicians who set up the network had problems installing the mod files which were given to them by us, so they had to wait for us to sort it out for them.
On the second day, the network technicians -- either mistakenly or were pressured into it by some players -- ran Quake III Arena for the first semi-final round. We therefore decided that it would be fair to all semi-finalists, to continue with that game for the second and third semi-final rounds, before switching back to Urban Warfare for the final tournament.
We hope everyone had a fun time at the Games Challenge, even if it was their favourite shooter. Remember, it didn't cost you anything and you had a 50-50 chance of going home with an Intel Pentium III PC system.

Here's a poser for you ...

Quake 3 Rocket Arena Tournament

Just when you thought that most of us Malaysians have difficulty entering International Quake 3 tournaments, well don't think anymore! Looks like our neighbour Singapore might be holding a Quake 3 RA tourney somewhere in August. Looks like its going to be RA, RA and more RA. Read more about the tourney here.

Obligatory update

ROCKET ARENA FOR Q3A IS OUT!! Old news but what the heck. For some local RA3 lan action, head on over to Silver Surfer in SS15 Subang Jaya as the Asylum inmates has got the smooth-as-baby-ass mod installed on a number of the terminals there. The SS3 branch of Warzone has got RA3 installed too, and while you're there say hi to Streak for me.... he's the latest addition to Warzone's army of Quakin' cashers and is based at the SS3 branch. Oh, anyone listened to the RA3 soundtrack yet? It any good?

Have I mentioned how much I detest playing computer games lately?

Quake3 In China

First it was big in Korea, now it has spread all the way to China. Yes, Quake3 Arena is now quite a big thing in China. There is going to be a Quake3 Tournament to be held in China from the 25th of August to the 27th of August. This tournament is an official CPL qualifying event for the upcoming Babbage's CPL $100,000 Tournament. So far the first prize for this qualifying tournament is RMB86,000 yuan in cash (around USD10,000 or around RM38,000). Read more about the tourney here.

Counter Strike Going Pro in Malaysia

After NBTD gotten 2nd and 4th place in the recent CPL Asia,it seems that more and more counter strike tournaments are being held and the support for these tourneys are incredible. So far the latest tournament by Gen-X cafe has 33 teams participating also including teams like NBTD, NBTD2, PLAM, PLAM2,SI and many more. Also just recently NBTD has opened their new cyber cafe called NBTD Cafe.It is located in Bangsar near an Ayamas shop in Lucky Garden. With all this happening, more and more sponsors seem to be coming up for Counter Strike teams to be sent overseas for tournaments like the Hong Kong open, Frag4 and many more.Seems like CS is getting Pro in Malaysia.

beetchin'

The past week was a total bore, although I'm a proud owner of a new [and probably warez'd] cd-writer. Although the drive was fully subsidised by my loving parents [hiya mom & dad!], money is flying out of my wallet real fast too, and all I've got to show from my spending sprees [totalling a bit over 300 bucks so far this month, and we're only halfway through!!] are just a couple of music CDs and a slightly larger belly. Oh boy, I can't wait for August.

I haven't touched computer games in 2 fuckin weeks. And I'm happy. I'll probably start a Gameaholic Anonymous group and sell a 12-step plan to quitting games soon.

We've got a new SoHai in town... everyone please give Mavik a bigass ass-stabbing greet. Now not only do I have to bear playing in the same clan as him, I would also be working with him in updating news [which isn't that much nowadays, but what the heck] on south of heaven. Anyway, welcome aboard Mistar Mavik... hope you enjoy your stay.

This just in: CHARMLESS FROM BACKROOM SURFS TRANSVESTITE-PR0N!! Here's one of the many links he has pimped to me [although I keep on reminding him to no avail that I'm not into the shit that he's into] : http://www.mulletsgalore.com/pornmullets/transi.jpg
He may, however, deny this perved-fetish of his when confronted and instead say that he chanced upon the link the 'shack boards though. Uh huh, whatever you say neekfong.

p/s: g[oo]sehump has a pretty startling revelation that he reveals at the Asylum, theorizing a link between one of our [former?] local quakers with one of, if not the best player from the south. So go check it out, yo!

Blacklabel: CPL Asia pics and gg Anthracite

Also, Anthracite has left Blacklabel due to clan inactivity.

TMQ Results

Here are the list of winners for the TMQ Quake 3 tourney held yesterday:

1. Whirizm
2. Reaper
3. Otakon
4. c010
5. Nael
6. m0nk3y
7 & 8. LaVache & Mavik

Whirizm beat his way through everyone, taking Nael (that's me!) into the negs in the semis (Q3DM13) and meeting Reaper who defeated Otakon in a very close match fought on T4 where Otak was leading at 9-3 and Reaper fought his way back into a last second tie that preceeded a 10-9 sudden death victory - probably the most exciting match of the day! 3-6 place was determined by a FFA (didn't really matter as the prizes were all the same from then on, except 3rd place). Vache took out Neon (the only female player in the tourney) to bag 7th place for that final winner's berth.

The finals between Whir and Reaper (both undefeated till then) were played on T2 and when the 10-minute buzzer went off (yes, 10 minutes only ala FRAG3 wassit?) Whir became the proud new owner of an Altec Lansing set of speakers (RM1000+), while Reaper had to be content with a(n obsolete?) PSX. Otakon, who topped the FFA got to walk off with a Voodoo3 (PCI) while the rest of the top 8 received Logitech Wingman force-feedback joysticks (worth RM450 each).

TMQ Quake3 Tournament this Sunday!

Yes peepz, it's on. And this time there'll be real prizes too! Among the prizes up for grabs this Sunday is a Sony Playstation, a graphics card [tourney director DonVito said that it would AT LEAST be a Voodoo3], and Altec Lansing speakers. Not so confirmed though, is a PC for the first prize. For more details, visit the TMQ website.

Anyone heard the ads on the Astro range of radio stations [Hitz, Era, Mix, etc..etc..] yet? I haven't actually... afterall, I rarely tune in to the mainstream-playing radio stations at all anyway. Oh, and FFA all the way till last man standing really blowz. Can't the winners of the later rounds be decided in nailbiting 1on1 matches?

Side Note : There'll be a disc-jockeying event at The Embassy, KL, this Sunday at around 3pm to 8pm, showcasing the best from Malaysia and Singapore. In fact, it would be a Malaysia VS Singapore event, with the best DJs from both sides of the causeway spinning their fingers out and giving the audiences a good time.
Why the announcement? Lately, I've been foraying into the world of samples and breakbeats and I have to say, I'm pretty hooked on this shit [although today I just blew 100 bucks on 2 totally techno-unrelated CDs]. And I feel this event would really be a good intro to ppl still new to the genre that MOS, ATB, and Vengaboys [surprisingly, they're highly respected for their melody and beats in the electronica community, but NOT for the vocals... I do think Kim rocks though] fall in to. Perhaps I'll see you guys there?

beetchin'

We are still alive.

Everyone is Diablo 2-ing and it sickens me to load up my lowly ill-equipped level 14 Necromancer [HIS NAME IS LIEKNOR, SO SAY HI!!]. I'm still trying to complete the 6th Quest of Act I, but I dread to meet Andariel after hearing war-stories about what a bitch she can be. And honestly, I'm afraid of venturing alone into any of the dungeons in D2. Especially in the dark. I guess RPGs just ain't my thang.

Clan Eclipse is dead. Kopitiam has quit the clan, and all his charges has done the same in the last few days. Oh well.
Jethrel from Asylum mentioned that his clan may be fielding their new draftees in their coming match with Clan Kraken. That is, if Asylum manage to shirk off their marital duties for a couple of hours [calvin@goosehump hooked up with a new gf which he courted over the net, gratz hoe]. And if they don't, Kraken will probably play Clan Backroom first. In the meantime, the Backroomers seem to be busy D2ing and filling up their newspage with D2-related news and gossip. Ugh, so where else am I gonna rip news off from now, beetches!
The new Warzone [LET'S CALL IT WARZONE DEUX.. I LIKE THE NAME!!] in SS3 is due to open soon. It's directly opposite a bigass food court, so, erm... bah, I don't have a funny comment that ties food with games. Bite me.

I'm desperate for a life out of the net. Help me.

Recruitments at the Lair

Clan Kraken has been expanding their clan roster lately. Everyone, please welcome Hide-X [pronounced as hee-day-axe] and Zeb to the local community. SENg, who pretty much rules over all things Kraken has also been thinking of roping in Kopitiam [yes, that Kopitiam] and a former schoolmate of his that goes by the handle of Craetech [he also happens to be a close friend of mine]. Kopitiam, who announced that he would be laying off Q3 for a bit to concentrate on reasons unknown to any of us, hasn't given an answer yet to the clan's offer. We'll just wait and see what happens then...

Kraken is finally open to clan challenges. Visit their page to get the contact details, or just email the clan's outspoken spokesperson... I believe that that would be me! keil@thefragile.com
