21. GERMANY - Gab Es Nicht Nur Uns Zwei?
Corinna May is 28 years old and has been blind since birth. She didn't start singing until she was 21, when she joined her sister singing in a church choir. She was a qualified masseuse when she was discovered by the TV Station Radio Bremen three years ago singing in a karaoke contest.
"Gab es nicht nur uns zwei?" was her first single and was released at the end of 1998. After the withdrawal of Matthias Reim from the German Eurovision Final in January, Polydor Records nominated her to take his place. A song had to be found and her manager presented her with Hor den Kindern einfach zu. He thought that the participation in the final would be a good publicity for her album which was due to be released in March of this year. What he did not expect was a landslide victory for Corinna at the final on March 12 in her hometown of Bremen. Soon after the final it became known that the song was not original, but had been released on a CD in English by a German group two years ago, a fact that her manager had concealed from Corinna and German TV. The song was disqualified, and Corinna travelled to Jerusalem merely as a guest of the TV company. Corinna has won a great deal of respect from the media for her brave recovery from her Eurovision set-back, and has been a constant guest in talk and entertainment shows since. Her album Wie ein Stern was released to great critical acclaim and contains both the German and English versions of "Gab es nicht nur uns zwei?". Corinna does not like to be classified as a "Schlager" singer, preferring the term "German pop".
